How to connect with FTPS and SFTP

How-to Access and accounts ftpftpssftpssh keypassive ports

Use explicit FTPS with the passive port range or SFTP with your account or an SSH key, and fix a listing that hangs.

FTPS

  1. Open FTP and create an account. It is named <client>_<name> and rooted in a subdirectory of your home.
  2. In your client choose FTP over explicit TLS (port 21). Plain FTP is off.
  3. Use passive mode. The passive range is 30000-30100 by default and must be reachable.

SFTP

  1. Use your account's UNIX user and password on port 22. SFTP works for every active account.
  2. To use a key, add your public key under Access, SSH keys. A key does not grant anything on its own: the account's shell setting decides whether it is SFTP-only or SFTP plus a shell.

The connection works but the listing hangs

The passive port range is not open or not reachable (firewall or your router). Use explicit FTPS and make sure 30000-30100 is open in Security, Firewall.

Notes

  • Files uploaded by FTP belong to you and the web server can read them.
  • A remote storage mounted at ~/storage also appears over FTP.
